The Fairview wrestling team put together a gritty two-day performance at the Chagrin Valley Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday, finishing fifth in the Chagrin Division with 70 team points.
Perry claimed the division title, followed by Crestwood, Beachwood, Jefferson, and then the Warriors. Conneaut, Edgewood, and Chagrin Falls rounded out the standings.
Fairview was led by a standout run from freshman Landon Strandahl at 106 pounds. Strandahl opened the tournament in dominant fashion, pinning Jefferson’s Brandon Sias in just 20 seconds. He followed that with another fall, putting Trinity’s Lawrence Wright on his back in 5:49 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Strandahl stayed in control with an 8-0 major decision over Berkshire’s Alex Sustin to punch his ticket to the championship match. There, he faced Beachwood's Phoenix Peters and battled hard before finishing as conference runner-up after a fall at the 3:30 mark.
Senior Colin Kay also earned a podium finish for the Warriors at 157 pounds. After dropping his opening-round bout to Berkshire’s Estevon Huesca, Kay put together an impressive run through the consolation bracket. He rolled to a 17-0 technical fall over Jefferson’s Josh Piccirillo, then edged Madison’s Atillo Porcello 10-8 with a strong third-period effort. Kay kept the momentum going with a third-period takedown to secure a 6-4 decision against Kirtland’s Shawn Haines, sending him to the fifth-place match. He ultimately finished sixth after a tough match against Geneva’s Alden Fleeson.
